This morning Ava had her first zoo class of the summer. It was a hippo class. I was chopped liver and Ava wanted Nonna to take her to class, so while the two of them were in class, Gianna and I went and found some iced coffee and hung out. Gianna even wore her hippo shirt for her first zoo outing. Ava made a hippo costume, played with hippos in water and in grass, made a hippo and alligator puppet, made a hippo book, stamped a hippo picture and painted a hippo. She also had "hay" for a snack. At the end of class I got to join the group for a walk to see Happy Hippo. The zoo keeper threw him pieces of apple so we could try to get a look, but Happy was more content under the water and didn't care for the snack.
When class was over, we walked the zoo for a bit. This bird were REALLY loud! It sounded like it had microphones in the enclosure.
I think these guys wanted in to cool off!
We saw this cute, fuzzy baby alpaca.
After our picnic lunch Ava modeled her hippo costume for me. I'm pretty sure I will need to steal the pattern of the hippo head to make with my kindergarteners during our zoo theme next year!
The costume was complete with a tail! Notice her showing me that hippos open their mouths really wide to scare away alligators!
